Purpose of Discover True Friendship Service Tour:

The purpose of this Service Tour is twofold.  Most obviously, it is an opportunity for those of us living in America and other affluent countries to serve our brothers and sisters who live without the many luxuries that we take for granted in a very real way.  More importantly, the Service Tour is a chance for people of different races, nationalities, religions and languages to break down the barriers of division and create “true friendships” of understanding and appreciation through working towards a common goal.

Components of the Discover True Friendship Service Tour: Zambia

-Special Preparation Capacity Training Program: July 1- 21 (*Optional)
 We offer an opportunity for any participants to join a fund-raising and preparation  program prior to the trip to Zambia if any one wishes to do so.

-Discover True Friendship:
 Making new friends at the MacKenzie Community, Ndola and  spend at least a day with  a friend; experiencing their life  style.

-Learn about the Sustainable Development and its application:

-Promote the effort made by the UN: Decade of the Education  of Sustainable Development-2005-2015, http://portal.unesco.org/education.

 -Learn about IRFF’s Holistic Micro Finance Program.

-Service Learning Project:
 Building a Building that can be used for 5th Grade Room and  library and basic health care.

-Support the McKenzie Little Angels (Children Choir  Team)

-Visit the orphanage house and the “old fork house”

-Visit the Museum: where the Second Secretary General of the UN: Mr. Dag Hammarskjöld died by an airplane accident.

-Visit the eighth wonder of the world: Victoria Falls

-Participating “IRFF International Experiential Learning Program”(*Optional.)  This program is an optional program for those who wish to stay longer and its time  table is flexible.

-Attending “Youth Assembly” at the UN in NY and the “Global Peace Festival”    in Washington DC, USA. (*Optional)

We are planning to arrange those who are interested to attend these events if those  schedules will work with participant from the USA.

"Victoria Falls "
The Smoke that Thunders
The local Kololo tribe called it "Mosi-oa-Tunya" or the Smoke That Thunders and it is affectionately called "Vic Falls" by those who return again and again to what has become one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Victoria Falls was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1989 for being one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world.



The Victoria Falls is situated in Southern Africa - on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia - and occurs where the powerful Zambezi River plunges down a series of basalt gorges in a breathtaking display of several waterfalls. Mist from the waterfalls can be seen more than 20 kilometers away and the thundering roar can be heard long before the falls can be seen. When the river overflows its banks, the falls are the largest curtain of falling water in the world. Between 20,000 and 500,000 cubic meters of water a minute crash into the Batoka Gorge. The falls consist  of seven waterfalls. The spray from the thundering water is partly responsible for sustaining the "rainforest" opposite the falls. The falls and town are situated in a 23,4km² national park. There are six national monuments within the park, including the falls. Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park (in Zambia), together with Victoria Falls National Park
(in Zimbabwe) were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1989.

“Jetboating”
Prepare for an action-packed, adrenalin-filled 45-minute jetboating experience in one of the most spectacular settings in the world. After donning your lifejacket and helmet and listening to a detailed safety briefing, your driver will take you on a quick warm-up. Nothing quite prepares you for the thrill, when your driver suddenly goes full throttle and you go shooting up the first rapid, heading for the base of the magnificent Victoria Falls.

“Bungi Jumping”
Until recently, the 111 meter plunge into the Zambezi River was considered the highest commercial jump in the world. However, the jump of the Victoria Falls Bridge is still a heart-stopping thrill second to none - and few pass this opportunity by! Only those over 14 years old and weighing more than 40kg may jump.

Participants Must:

• Be 16 years of age or older
• Agree to abide by the Participant Guidelines
• Complete the application form and essay and return it by May 30,  2008
 Essay: its content should include why you want to join this tour, what you feel you  can contribute to this project, and what you hope to gain from this participation. Be  sure to include an account of any previous experience in voluntary service programs
• Participate in an interview if requested
• Pay all fees in a timely manner

Cost:

• A fee of $600.00(US $) will cover lodging, meals, excursions and all  ground transportation, as well as the trip to Victoria Falls.
• The flights to Nodal International Airport in Zambia will cost about  $2,400 from New York, USA, depending on when tickets are purchased.  Of course it will vary according from where you will fly as well.
o Basically, participants are responsible for their own tickets. They should arrive by the morning of July 23rd to Ndola, Zambia and should plan to go back on August 7th or later. However, we will organize as a group from New York to Ndola for those who wish to fly as a group.  Participants are welcomed to coordinate their travel to Zambia through the IRFF International Office if they wish to do so. 

Further Notes:

• We are looking for approximately 12 participants from the USA as well as  Europe and other developed countries for this project. 
• Applications will be reviewed and candidates will be selected from the  information provided, including the essay.
• Interviews by phone or in person may be requested at the discretion of the  organizers of this project.
• All participants are responsible for all necessary documents such as  passports, visas and vaccinations.
